This is the year that the band 10 mark 10 years since they first formed. To celebrate they are setting up a ‘10th anniversary festival’ here in Korea on the 10th October. The band will be joined onstage by guitarist Hanjoo Lee (the owner of Yogiga Gallery) and drummer Hoonmin Park (Polyich) whom the band consider among some of the finest musicians they have worked with during their 10 years together. The festival will also feature performances by some of the band’s favorite Korea-based artists KIRARA, Hoegidong Danpyunsun, JuckJuck Grunzie, SILICA GEL, Nice Legs & Byul.org. The show will start at 5pm at Mudaeruk (Mu). Tickets are 20,000 won available at the door only.
In 2005 Japanese noise musician Marqido was on a world tour and stopped over in Korea where he met Itta, an ambient musician there. Itta really liked what Marqido was doing and suggested they form a duo. They immediately played three successful shows together and subsequently formed the band 10. The name 10 came about by combining each artist's solo project names. By a strange coincidence, the day they decided on their band’s name it happened to be the 10th day of the 10th month … giving their name a little extra meaning.
After forming the band they decided to base themselves here in Korea; however, through myspace they received invites from all over the world to go and play shows. The band has ended up touring all over, having played shows in Asia (Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines etc), Europe (England, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, France, Germany etc) as well as shows on the east coast of the USA. While travelling the world the duo have seen lots of wonderful nature, jammed with musicians from all walks of life, played shows and recorded albums.
As individual performers Marqido and Itta were experimental electronic improvisational performers, while as 10 they started out playing a mix of noise, avant garde and psychedelic pop. Their aim was to produce witty experimental music, but as they travelled the world as musicians over the years they became influenced by the people they met and the different environments they encountered and their songs began to change, so 10’s music become a fusion of different styles. In 2013 they coined the phrase ‘Tengger’ to describe the kind of music that 10 make. ‘Tengger’ is a word that means ‘limitless sky’ in Mongolian and ‘big ocean’ in Hungarian.
