Concert Preview

>>>>> DoIndie has some tickets to give away for Live Club Day (Mar 27th). Details on how to win can be found at the bottom of this article! <<<<<

The only thing that spoils the excitement of a music festival is the dilemma of having to choose which bands to see. Live Club Day, with its 10 venues hosting 36 musical acts of the highest caliber, is no exception - but the thrill of running between venues after carefully planning one’s timetable is part of the fun!

But for those people who have not yet been to many indie shows or, those of you who have trouble making difficult choices … it might be hard to make your own timetables. To help you out four of the DoIndie team have made some recommendations for you. The four members who have made their recommendations are regular concert goers in the Hongdae scene. Check out our recommendations below. Choose one and follow it (we are sure you won’t be disappointed), make your own using our recommendations or ... ignore us altogether. Either way, you will have a great evening. Before you set off, make sure you check the locations of the venues, you don’t wanna miss a great show because you are lost in the back streets of Hongdae.

Rose's course :

This month, I’m going to take the bold step of not viewing the awesome headline act (Jang Kiha and the Faces), but instead focusing my attention on two of the bands who will have just proudly returned from representing Korea at the SXSW festival in Texas: psychedelic grunge rockers Asian Chairshot (first on the lineup at Club FF) and high voltage hair-metal heads Victim Mentality (at the intimate Club Ta). The leopard-printed Krokodile, Skorpion and crew are always a guarantee of a riotously good and sexy time.

In between those two I’ll dash off to Veloso, as it’s been too long since I’ve caught my favorite blues rock duo, Kim Ganji (drums) and Ha Heonjin (guitar and vocals), who may be more familiar with local audiences now after his recent appearance in the indie documentary  “Party 51”. Their laid back humor and elegance of play underscore Ha’s baritone, a voice like none you’ve ever heard in Hongdae.

I’ll be rounding things off in true celebratory fashion at a very rare appearance by Lazybone (Club Ta at 11pm), the first generation ska punk legends who triumphantly returned to the scene two years ago. This is a band that truly has to be seen live to be appreciated, as frontman Jundoy, backed by a wicked horn section, can both entertain and get a crowd of all tastes and ages jumping like no one else can.

20:00 : Asian Chairshot (Club FF)
21:00 : Kim Ganji x Ha Heonjin (Veloso)
22:00 : Victim Mentality (Club Ta)
23:00 : Lazybone (Club Ta)

Doyeon’s course :

Last time out at Live Club Day I boldly gave one of the biggest acts, Guckkasten a miss. I’m not going to do that this time round though. So the first band I will go and see is Jang Kiha and the Faces. Jang Kiha and the Faces are super famous, everyone knows who they are. They are great. They have great rhythms and an amazing stage presence. More than anything Jang Kiha’s lyrics and his delivery of them  are really unique. Also, its been a really, really long time since I saw them play in Hongdae. You won’t get a much better start to a show than Jang Kiha and the Faces, a great choice. Next up on my list is 9 & The Numbers, same venue, so no movement required. 9 & The Numbers are one of my favorite synth / guitar pop bands. Their guitar riffs are great and their lyrics are really unique. I’ve listened to their albums over and over again. My third show for the evening will of course be Gonne Choi. When she was young she played Pansori (traditional Korean musical storytelling), but these days she is a folk singer. She has a real depth to her voice so when you first listen to her you might think ‘wow!’. A few years ago she was invited on a European tour by a German record label. She is that good! Make sure you don’t miss her show. Up to this point, the music will have been fairly ‘soothing’ but about now I will want to dance the night away like a mad woman so next up I will be heading over to GoGos2 to see GoGo Star. Gogo Star belt out a unique analogue disco style to go along with their strong stage presence. If you see them once, you are sure to become obsessed. After all that I will see out what’s left of Live Club Day in Bigbird with Oops Nice and Man. See you there!

20:00 : Jang Kiha and the Faces (KT&G SangSang Madang)
21:00 : 9 & The Numbers (KT&G SangSang Madang)
22:00 : Gonne Choi (Veloso)
23:00 : Gogo Star (GoGos2)
00:00 : Oops Nice (Bigbird)
01:00 : Man (Bigbird)

Patrick’s course :

I too (despite being a long time fan) plan to avoid the obvious choice of Jangkiha & the Faces and will start my night checking out a band I have heard so much about but never seen live, Danpyunsun and the Sailors (at Veloso). They come highly recommend by several musicians I know, so I’m stoked to finally see them live.  From Veloso I will dash over to see hard rockers Harry Big Button. Hopefully they will find time to drop in their awesome Tears for Fears cover (Mad World) somewhere in among their set of hard-hitting originals. After that, I’m gonna pop over to GoGos2 (just a few metres away) to watch Super Kidd, mainly because the name is cool and I’ve heard they are a fun live act. Last up I plan to make the short return journey to FF for Gate Flowers so I can see what all the fuss is about. Once they have finished I’m going to stay put in FF (why bother moving when you don’t have to) and have a bit of a boogie to the one and only DJ Eddie & his indie anthems. It is the only proper way to end a big night of rocking out in Hongdae.

20:00 : Danpyunsun and the Sailors (Veloso)
21:00 : Harry BigButton (Club FF)
22:00 : Super Kid (GoGos 2)
23:00 : Gate Flowers (Club FF)
00:00 : Super Fun Dance Party - DJ Eddie (클럽 FF)

Ilwha’s course :

I want to jump and dance around right from the start until the end of the night. There are so many good bands playing in the first time slot, so it was really hard to choose who to go and see! Over the evening, rather than heading out to discover new bands I’ve opted to see all my favorite bands. They are all regular performers in the Hongdae scene but they have all said they will be playing special sets to celebrate being part of Live Club Day. I don’t want to miss any of that. Last time I went to Live Club Day, I ended up staying at FF and GoGos2 all night … and it looks like I will be doing the same this time round as well! To make it even easier for me, they are right next door to each other. I’m gonna have a big ‘Fire Friday’ night!

20:00 : Space Papa (GoGos2)
21:00 : Post Panic (GoGos2)
22:00 : Sugar Donut (Club FF)
23:00 : GoGo Star(GoGos2)
00:00 : Oops Nice (Bigbird)
01:00 : Man (Bigbird)
