August 7th - 9th : Songdo Pentaport Park :

It may be hard to believe, but the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival is about to celebrate its tenth year, making it Korea’s oldest and best-known summer rock festival. Held over three steamy days in Songdo, Incheon, it has certainly come a long way since its first—some say disastrous—incarnation as the Triport Festival which was rained out in 1999. Since its re-launch in 2006, Pentaport and the company behind it, Yescom Entertainment, have worked hard to shake the old image of muddy fields, poor facilities and pouring rain, to establish it as just about the only true international rock festival to have kept going successfully throughout the ups and downs of Korea’s alternative music scene over the past ten years.

As a veteran of many festivals, when I booked my ticket to Pentaport last summer, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Yet it was, from start to finish, a fantastic and comfortable experience, the memory of which is making me excited for the 2015 festival, to be held from August 7th to 9th. The number five implied by its name and logo encapsulates Pentaport’s five intended themes: music, passion, friendship, environmental friendliness and “D.I.Y.” (the independent, free spirit of the event). While these are all, of course, in evidence, I would like to share with you the five reasons why I would encourage anyone to buy a ticket to Pentaport 2015.

Convenience. For Seoulites, this is the easiest festival to get to: while one can book shuttle buses from several different departure points, simply hop on the subway and take it all the way to the end of the Incheon Line 1 (International Business District), from which it’s a short walk down the road to the site—unlike many other exhausting festivals held in transport-barren countryside! This means not having to find accommodation, spend money on it or waste time getting there. If you are less of a princess than I am, and you do want to catch the late night acts, get the full festival experience, or think you’ll miss the last train home, there is a well-appointed camping zone, and you can book tents that include everything you need. The ablution facilities are spotless and the ground comfortable. In addition, special hotel packages will be available soon. Remember that Songdo is a large, modern city so there are plenty of hotels and motels to suit all budgets in the area.

The venue. “Moonlight Festival Park”, or Penta Park as it’s now known, is the festival’s new dedicated venue, and a lovely one it is. When I arrived last year, remembering the hardships of barren, hot and muddy festivals past, I literally danced around with joy. While sparkling new skyscrapers loom in the background, here there are rolling green hills and trees and flowers. There’s a waterfall. There are people picnicking with tents and blankets. There’s the artistically decorated chillout zone around the reggae stage (which sometimes includes a mini beach). There’s a splash pool and water guns and bikinis, and a kids zone and games set up at all the sponsors’ tents (you will walk away with free crap). And best of all, everything is clean, spacious and (except for in the mosh pit), mud-free! No need for those rubber boots!

The facilities. As I mentioned, this festival is clean. There are plenty of toilets, continuously being cleaned and supplied, and plenty of rubbish bins and recycling. Being an established park as opposed to a pop-up venue, there are many services like ATMs and a convenience stores on hand, as well as the expected merchandise sales, child care, police and medics. Last year there was an impressive array of food choices on hand, even for vegetarians, and a wide, calm area in which to sit and eat. And of course, all manner of alcohol, including the ubiquitous Cass bars all over the venue. Last year despite the crowds, I didn’t notice any painfully long lines and there never seemed to be any shortage of anything. And while you’re at the park, the inevitable rain won’t be much of a bother, with lots of places to shelter and raincoats handed out.

The five stages. The overseas headliners are generally put on the massive Pentaport Stage (my highlights there were the joyful crowd being sprayed down by a fire truck during Kingston Rudieska’s afternoon show, and later singing along with Starsailor), and then there’s the covered sub stage, or Dream Stage, providing protection from the rain, and turning into the “Groove Session” stage for the electronic acts and all-nighters after midnight. The smaller outdoor Moonlight Stage provides a platform for lesser known local bands and rookies, while the reggae stage is traditionally my favorite, a little laidback hippie-friendly world unto its own, where a bonfire is lit after dark. But the highlight for me last year was hands down the brand new Some Zone. This resembled a small circus tent, complete with hay bales, in which fans could catch intimate acoustic performances by some of the big-name vocalists, as well as interact with them in games. I’m hoping this zone will again be presided over by MC Jeon Ji-Han, inimitable vocalist of Peterpan Complex, whose face adorned the paper masks we were all given to wear at the entrance.

The atmosphere. Of course the music is what matters most. The thing about Pentaport is there will be something for everyone, and local bands are given equal exposure as the foreign draw cards. It goes without saying that wherever there’s alcohol, summer weather and loads of great music to choose from, there’s going to be a great atmosphere, there’s going to be dancing and cheering and banner-waving and stage-diving. But I think all the comforts I mentioned above are what make this festival a truly enjoyable and stress-free experience. Personally, it was like one big neighborhood party, as I ran into so many people I know, expat and Korean music-loving friends, Busan friends, Hongdae friends, musicians. Every one of them with smiles as big as mine.
