In early January this year EBS announced that due to budget cuts it was going to reduce the number of weekly broadcasts of its popular music program ‘EBS Space Gong-gam’ (a TV show that regularly showcases live performances by indie bands & musicians across all genres) from 5 times a week to twice a week. They also stated that they would be reducing the number of producers working on the show.
Musicians and fans alike are angry at the proposed cuts and have organised a set of weekly ‘relay concerts’ over the coming 6 weeks to raise awareness and protest at the proposed cuts. From January 22nd there will be a ‘relay’ concert held every Wednesday in different venues around hongdae.
You can get involved and help support you local scene simply by attending one of these great (and very cheaply priced) shows. Tickets only cost 5,000 won (money goes to paying venue costs) and you will get to watch a load of fantastic bands as well as help make a difference to the local scene. Raising awareness of these cuts via social media and the organization of those shows has already had a positive effect with EBS recently committing to increase the broadcasts of the show to at least 4 times a week. However there are still concerns over potential job losses for EBS staff, so the ‘relay concerts’ are still going ahead. Get out there and support a good cause.
Local musicians have also created a Facebook page where you can keep up to date with the ‘I want to Gong-Gam’ movement: https://www.facebook.com/wewanttogonggam
