Sometimes we’re all so preoccupied with trying desperately to be different from everyone else that we lose what it means to just be ourselves; our silly and often foolish selves.  We live day to day in moments of joy, sadness, anger, and the occasional drunken belligerence. So how do you tell if you’re happy? You listen to a band whose acronym spells out TP ;)

Enter self proclaimed infections power-poppers Table People.

Each element of the band is carefully placed and subtly brilliant. Drums are solid, hard hitting, and very danceable. The bass kicks in deep funk grooves and punches out that hard rock.  Guitar work is uniquely progressive and has just the right amount of shredding. And the vocals tell a story with the appropriate nonchalance of a cool guy at a party.  In the vein of Built to Spill or Belle and Sebastian.

Table People speaks with a kind of honesty that is lacking in most music these days. They’re not trying to blowing your fucking mind with crazy effects and synth work. They’re not focused on existential crises or the great unknown. They’re just good story tellers grounded in the world around them. Lyrical meaning isn’t clouded in overly ambiguous metaphors. It’s just life through and through. And because of that people can really identify with what they’ve got to say. The situations they speak of are ones everyone is familiar with. It hit’s home.

In the four years that Table People have been playing, they’ve self released one EP and one split EP with fellow Seoul rockers Les Sales.  Ride With Me is their first full-length release and the tunes really show how they’ve grown as a band. All the essential TP elements are present, but they seem more comfortable with the unique place they’ve created for themselves.

This can best be exemplified in tracks like Real Good Time, which has to be the perfect night closer to a great party. You know the one.  That long night that goes well into the sunrise.  Young party goers sleepily turning in to finally call it a night. The adrenaline now run its course and exhaustion settling in, everyone is still giddy with lingering excitement from the night’s activities.  This is what means to be young, independent, and free.  Goddamn I love this song.

The album’s title track Ride With Me also invokes a certain nostalgia for days of youth. Days when it didn’t matter who was who cuz we’re all just friends. Promises weren’t kept but hearts weren’t broken. We were all just living for today and enjoying every moment. “I don’t care what you do on the weekdays ~ but today’s your day to ride with me.”  The instrumental breakdown in the middle of the song paints the perfect picture of the feeling you get from listening to Table People, young and carefree.
