Band Introduction Concert Preview

Sometimes I worry that, as it relates to music, the range of our human emotions is slowly being simplified into a very basic spectrum of bright, acceptable colors; the ubiquitous dance driven music meant to evoke the right "get lucky" party atmosphere. But what of the darker palette? The true spectrum of human emotion delves deeper than just partying and having a good time. No Respect for Beauty is a necessary component of that broader spectrum.

The name No Respect for Beauty is both a reflection of our time and of the universal human condition as a whole. "We want to express those somewhat negative aspects of human life in the form of music so that music could be the solace of our lives." says bandleader June S. Choi.

They first hit the scene in 2010 and soon earned street cred as that band who all wear the same t-shirt.  But recognition quickly grew as they developed a fan base in what has become a strong movement of Korean post-rock bands. In 2013, they split with their bass player and completely disappeared from the scene. Thankfully, after a long 2-year break, they have a new bass player (Hyeong Hun Lee) and are back gigging again.

All too often post-rock is seen as just a normal band sans vocals. The void left by the departed vocalist is not filled by anything extraordinary, just a band without singing. What sets No Respect apart from their post-rock counterparts is their compositional prowess. Yes their harmonies are beautiful and their rhythms moving, but the pace and flow of each piece is natural and comforting. Take my hand and I will guide you through the darkness.

No Respect For Beauty have taken part in a number of contests including SSamzie, CJ Azit, & KBS Top Band. They were the winners of EBS's Hello Rookie in October 2011.  Their debut album "Why Perish" was released to great acclaim in early 2012 on Pastel Records and since then they've gone on two Korea-wide tours with such artists as Pg.lost and Yamagata Tweakster.
